sooooo tired again today but we carry on

didn't sleep in as much today which was good but i'm still. very sleepy. might go to bed early tonight because my condition lately really doesn't seem great -- any time i'm tired enough to start coughing, i get a little bit nervous, and i was going to say "but at least i don't have a sore throat" but it does feel a little off. sure do wish i only developed cold symptoms when i actually had a cold, but this is fine too, i guess.

anyway i said last post that i wanted to talk about eephus so maybe i'll talk about eephus, yeah! actually i've watched four movies this year so far, which could be a depression thing, or a "i don't have that much energy to do more active tasks" thing, or even just a "well i did say i'm trying to watch more movies this year and once the semester kicks back up that probably won't happen so much" thing. most likely all three.

wait, shit, actually i might have watched wake up dead man last year. but it was still within the week, so we'll count it.

i think one of my favorite things about watching movies is reading the negative reviews after and judging them, which is not my kindest pastime, but some people simply do not Get It, whether "it" is clear subtext or cinematography (which i don't really know a lot about either to be fair) or, like... major plot points of the movie to a degree that i'm like oh, okay, so you didn't finish this. no shame in quitting, but way to jump to conclusions, you know?

i got derailed so here's what i've watched so far and what i thought of them:

knives out: wake up dead man

WE'RE SO BACK BABYYYYYYYYYYY

sorry. sorry!!!! here's my thing: people liked glass onion a lot, except for me, who thought glass onion was Just Fine. i've watched it twice to see if my feelings changed on it, and they did not. i LOOOOOVED the first knives out movie, so glass onion was a major letdown for me.

wake up dead man just felt... better, and i can't quite put my finger on why. my current theory is that maybe i just prefer a late entry for benoit blanc, but hey, who knows!

i do have some more complicated feelings about blanc's religion monologuing, but i think maybe that comes with the territory of my particular history with christianity.

fun fucking mystery, though! looking forward to seeing what the rewatch value on that is going to be.

eephus

yeah, so i don't really... know what movies are popular or did well or anything like that, so i just went onto rotten tomatoes and opened their "best of 2025 by tomatometer score" list or whatever. i think it's secondarily sorted by audience score? regardless, it means that the stuff at the top of the list aren't necessarily crowd pleasers. for example, here we have a slow-ass baseball movie that kind of doesn't even have a climax.

the premise of eephus is that a middle school is being constructed on the local baseball field (the next closest one is like a half-hour away in a town that all the players seem to hate), and that this is the last game the two teams in the movie will play on that field. which is why i could actually watch it, honestly, because i do not care about baseball, but i can appreciate it as a vehicle for storytelling. a group of men finding excuses not to end the game because when it's over, so is their last time on that field. a collection of different personalities dealing with the loss in different ways. etc, etc.

i'm not even sure i'm in love with this movie but i do find it fascinating, because as a piece of work, i really feel like it lives up to its title. i didn't know what an eephus was (i repeat: i do not care about baseball), but the movie very kindly described it! the most important thing about it, to me, was that it seems so, so slow, and then suddenly it's over.

which is the movie. it really is the movie. i have pretty bad adhd and it makes sitting through movies a struggle, but i sat through this thing TWICE. it feels so slow, but the run time is only an hour and a half or so, and then it's just over. the ending isn't satisfying. this is not a criticism. i do not think it was supposed to be satisfying, and i do not think it should have been.

i don't even know if i recommend it or not.

i actually think i'm too tired to talk about what else i watched so far, so i'll list them here and maybe touch on them tomorrow:

  • on becoming a guinea fowl
  • sister midnight

good niiiiight <3

  2. Dude I didn't get any sleep either. Was it in part because I stayed up late reading? Yes. But the extra time after that trying and failing to sleep is not on me.
Also yes loved the new knives out!

    1. ohhh my god it's been a long time since i've stayed up too late because i'm reading but that's always SUCH a joy... love a book (or fic, realistically) i can't put down! but yeah the insomnia is unforgivable, especially if you were actually tired enough to fall asleep at that point. that shit's the worst.

  3. I'm a Knives Out lover and a Glass Onion hater so I really need to watch that third one.... but I also love reading the negative reviews of a movie when I'm done. It's just joyful for me somehow. Never heard of Eephus, might check that one out!

    1. i haven't seen knives out recently enough that i could tell you for certain if wake up dead man is as good as the original, but to me it felt like it was closer to it in spirit! glad to be able to provide an opinion as a glass onion unenjoyer (and it's nice to know that i'm not alone in that movie not doing it for me, honestly).

if you do watch eephus i hope you enjoy it, or at least are glad you watched it!
